After thinking this 48bit business through a little, I'm not sure there's
much point in working with 48bit images in Pano Tools at the present time.
Since I'm Mac based, I'm limited to PhotoShop which does not allow multiple
layers or layer masks in 48bit mode -- the two key things that I use to
assemble panos and blend color & density from one image to another.
Of course, I can always color correct individual images in 48bit, but once I
need to apply any kind of mask or layer them together, I have to convert to
24bit.
Perhaps if PhotoShop 6 someday comes out with better 48bit support, the
story will be different.
I do have to say though that the 48 bit scans I just received are noticeably
sharper than the 24 bit scans of the same negs. At first, I thought the
service bureau had accidentally applied an unsharp mask contrary to my
instructions, but that wasn't the case. The extra sharpness is due to the
extra color bit depth. In that case, perhaps warping the 48bit images first
in pano tools would result in a sharper post-processed image. Hmmm. Maybe
I'll run a test as soon as I get some time.
