Me too. Years of user interface study have taught me that users pay
attention to where the action is. Indicators on the periphery of the action
go unnoticed. It's only in the last couple of weeks I've paid any attention
at all to the status bar!
So, I create feedback in the focus of interest, i.e. the downloading
picture. Animated gifs.
