Adding roll to the viewer would be OK as long as:

1.  It didn't affect performance.
2.  It was realtively difficult for a newbie to get sideways
3.  It would be used primarily from scripting.

Regarding the adjust tool -

I recall having a similar problem opening the final image 
when I upgraded to Photoshop 5.5 for Windows.

I resolved this problem by moving the Photoshop folder
out of 'Program Files' and into the root directory.  Apparently,
PTools doesn't like the space in the name 'Program Files'.
