well this seems to work: :
http://www.culture.com.au/virtual/gpodir3.htm - this uses 6 plane
surfaces
appropriately arranged so to make a cube -- making each side very
slightly
closer to the camera does the trick with the seam issue
now to make a drag interface .. and make tilt limits at +-90
