PanoTools:
Practical Depth of Field-10,5mm-f2,8
Hans Nyberg 2006-Mar-02 18:53:41
I am not much for theoretical discussions about DOF (Depth of Field) as
it has been at the panotools list for several days.
I am a photographer and to me it is a practical thing and I could not
care less about mathematical models.
Sharpness is many thing especially when you work digitally.
A supersharp image can look unsharp because of lack of contrast and
digital sharpening can change a lot.
Last Friday I had a job which forced me to use full opening f2,8 on my
Nikon 10,5mm.
The focus scale on the 10,5 is not much of a scale so to use it you
have to do some practical tests first.
Especially as I use an adapter on the Canon 20D.
The scale on the 10,5 is very small and a change of 1mm when turning
it is enough to destroy you calibration.
So after getting the right setting I taped it.
The subject was a performance by the famous Superkids gymnastics group
from Aarhus and it was recorded for TV in the Concert Hall in Aarhus.
Even if there was a lot of lights and lasershow the exposure was only
1/40 sec at 2,8 and 800 ASA.
The scene had enough for 1/100 sec to take extra shots of fast
movements.
6 shots around + zenith was used for the stitch and I used an
additional shot for the scene which was blended in after the stitch.
My own panohead and PTMac + Enblend
The large movie is 3,3mb 3000x3000 cubefaces from full resolution
5000x10000
The small movie is 1,7mb 1908x1908 cubefaces from a resized and
sharpened 3000x6000
The Tv camera to the left of me is only 1 m from my lens.
