If you use an 8mm fisheye on the 1Ds you loose more than half of the
sensor pixels. A EOS 20D gives you higher total resolution than the
1Ds or even the 1DsMkII with this lens. For the best compromise
between resolution and number of images to shoot and stitch use a
15mm fisheye as Yuval recommends.

PTMac probably doesn't have all the features of recent PTGui but it
is based on panotools and hence benefits from their superb
versatility and quality. Correct me if I'm wrong but you need to
defish fisheye images for usage with Realviz. No need to do that for
panotools. See http://tinyurl.com/lyer9 for a user review and
comparison of Realviz and PTGui.

A (still not complete) list is found on the wiki:
http://wiki.panotools.org/?title=Heads

My personal opinion is that the Manfrotto SPH is overpriced compared
to it's quality. I suspect it wouldn't be sturdy enough for the
relatively heavy 1Ds...
