let me correct. It was a JavaScript (so that it could be implemented also on servers that do not have PHP installed).

The detection takes less than 2 seconds in more than 50% of cases (detailed statistics will be available on the site when there is enough sampling). It is run only once. An optimum strategy would be to run it asynchronously in an iframe so that it won't delay the rest of the page. There are two downsides to such a strategy: if the user refuses cookies, the information will not make it back to the next page. And if the entry page is a panorama, the server will have to display without knowing the available plug ins.
